Colleen worked in daily journalism until an editor ordered her to “stop writing stories about people with AIDS. That stuff kills us with suburban readers.” She quit and started running a soup kitchen. She has had one foot in journalism and one in non-profits ever since.
She assists public intellectuals and reformers in writing op-eds that have appeared in major national venues and in many cases contributed to the passage of legislation. Her own work is featured by NPR, The Washington Post, The New York Times, The American Prospect, PARADE and many others. Colleen is co-author of Broke In America: Seeing, Understanding, and Ending U.S. Poverty, which Jeff Sachs dubbed “a road map to a better America.” She developed communication campaigns that supported reforms in juvenile justice systems now widespread around the country. She developed a podcast series for the Yale School of Medicine that helped innovators in biomedical science explain their work to the general public. Her writing and audio journalism has been recognized by the American Medical Writers Association, the National Newspaper Association, the Society of Professional Journalists and the Catholic Press Association. She chairs the Good Neighbors Community Fund, which resists the criminalization of homelessness and supports a resident-run tiny home community.
